Bread units & glycemic load

Build a meal, get carbs, XE / BE / KE and a carb-weighted glycemic index and load. Values are per 100 g of food as eaten.

Your meal

Custom food: type any name and enter carbs per 100 g from the label. EU labels list "carbohydrate" without fiber; US "Total Carbohydrate" includes fiber, so subtract fiber for net carbs.

Estimates for education and meal planning only. This page does not calculate insulin doses and is not medical advice. Real carbohydrate content varies by recipe, ripeness and cooking; check labels and follow your diabetes care team.

What the units mean

  • KE (Kohlenhydrateinheit): 10 g of carbohydrate.
  • BE (Broteinheit): 12 g, the definition in Germany's diet regulation until 2010; still widely used.
  • XE (хлебная единица): 10–12 g depending on the school, often 10 g net or 12 g counting fiber.
  • GL = GI × available carbs (g) ÷ 100. Meal GI here is the carb-weighted average of the foods with a known GI.
